Swimming is one of the best ways to stay healthy, and it is something you never outgrow! Enjoy our 25-meter swimming pool for lap swimming, instructional swim classes or simply to splash and have fun with the family. The pool schedule divides time between these three areas.
Aquatic Classes
PIKE - LEVEL 1
This level helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water. Skills learned are: basic paddle stroke and kicking, pool safety, and being comfortable holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming. Children advance when they are able to swim 5 feet without floatation on their front and back.
EEL - LEVEL 2
This level is for children who are comfortable in the water. They are taught to flutter kick, float and perform progressive paddle stroke. Children advance when they are able to swim across the pool front and back without assistance. Children must be able to swim 5 feet without floatation on their front and back to register for eel.
RAYS - LEVEL 3
This class builds on endurance. Children will learn treading water, rhythmic breathing and will begin the back crawl. Children must be able to swim 15 feet without assistance on their front and back to register for Rays.
STARFISH - LEVEL 4
This class is for the advanced preschool swimmer. Students continue to develop style and technique in swimming and diving. They will continue working on the front crawl with rotary breathing and the back stroke. Children must be able to swim 10 meters without support on their fronts and back to register for Starfish.
POLLIWOG - LEVEL 1
Children in this level learn the paddle stroke skills, rhythmic breathing, front/back floats and glides. Child advances when they can paddle 25 meters. This class is for all beginner swimmers ages 6 years and older.
GUPPY - LEVEL 2
Children begin to work on front crawl, rhythmic breathing and symmetrical arm movements. Children advance when they can swim 25 meters of front and back crawl. Children must be comfortable in deep water and able to paddle stroke 25 meters to register for Guppy.
MINNOW - LEVEL 3
Children continue to work on front and back crawl. They are introduced to elementary backstroke and sidestroke. Children must be able to swim 25 meters front and back crawl to register for Minnow.
FISH - LEVEL 4
Children continue to work on stroke proficiency of front and back crawl. They continue to work on elementary backstroke and sidestroke. Children are introduced to the breaststroke. Children advance when they can swim 50 meters each of front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, 25 meters of breaststroke and sidestroke. Children must be able to swim 25 meters of front and back crawl to register for Fish.
FLYING FISH - LEVEL 5
Children continue working on stroke proficiency (all competitive strokes) and endurance. Children advance when they can swim 100 meters of front/crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke to register for Flying Fish.
SHARK - LEVEL 6
Children continue to work on stroke proficiency and endurance. They continue to work on the four competitive strokes along with their starts and turns. Inverted breaststroke, over arm sidestroke, and trudgen crawl are introduced. Children must be able to swim 100 meters of front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and breaststroke to register for Shark.
PORPOISE - LEVEL 7
Children continue to work on endurance with a 500 meter swim. They continue to work on the competitive strokes and their speed. Children must be able to swim 100 meters of front crawl, breast stroke, sidestroke and elementary backstroke. They must have a knowledge of inverted breaststoke, over arm sidestroke and trudgen crawl to register for Porpoise.
SHRIMPS - 6 mo. to 3 years
Join your child in the water for a wonderful, positive aquatic experience. We introduce your young one to the wonder of water through songs, games and basic skill building play. Swim diapers are required!
POP & PEANUT
Dads join your child in the water for a wonderful, positive aquatic experience. This is your opportunity to share one-on-one time with your child. Introduce your young one through songs, games, and basic skill building play. Swim diapers are required!
Progressive Swim Program
The Tri-Cities Family YMCA swim program integrates the National YMCA aquatic program and the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. It features twelve swimming levels for all ages and swimming abilities. Children are taught skills to gain coordination, endurance, safety and confidence, all while having fun! Aquatics classes are open to children ages 6 months and up. Call today to enroll your child in swim class!
Aquatics Fitness Classes
Water Works
Use a variety of equipment including flotation belts, barbells and water logs, to give you a great cardiovascular workout while strengthening muscles.
A.O.A. Water Exercise
This class is designed for Active Older Adults, and uses the buoyancy of the water to improve strength, flexibility, muscle tone while minimizing stress to the joints.
Penguin Swim Team
Join in on the great fun of competitive swimming. Our Penguin Swim Team runs from mid-October through March. Daily swim practices are held, with meets on Saturdays. Children must be able to swim one length of the pool.
